My class and I have started podcasts, so our group created one about WikiHows. Here is a sneak peek at the script, as well as the link to the podcast!
Thank you, Hope. Our next one is “How to React to an Ugly Baby,” by Marli. (speech here) Thank you, Marli. The next one is “How to Hold in Your Poop in Embarrassing Situations,” by Brooklyn.(speech here)
So… it split the podcast into two segments for whatever reason, so the top is part one and the bottom is part two.
What is one thing you learned? Smartphones are lessening social interaction. People are constantly interacting through technology, and are losing the skills to talk face-to-face.
What is one statistic that surprised you? “In this Bank of America survey, 29 percent of Americans chose text as their preferred method of conversing with others, compared to 40 percent of millennials. While 38 percent of Americans of all ages chose in person conversations as their top choice, compared to 33 percent of millennials” (Hill). It was shocking to see how many people prefer texting rather than in person conversation.
Do you think face to face communication is important? Why or why not? I do believe that face-to-face conversation is important. It will have a positive effect on those that we interact with in life (bosses, colleagues, etc.). Also, these skills are great to have on hand for future work presentations.
QR Codes are being used more frequently these days. You are able to scan one with your phone’s camera. QR Codes allow you to instantly receive information after hovering your camera over some block – like shapes. QR Codes are definitely easier to use that punching in a website or going for hours to search for something. An example would be at a store. You can scan the code underneath the item tag to see it on the company’s website.
The cloud is a place for storing whatever is on a device (computer). Data is uploaded and saved, and it can be accessed when there is WiFi available. The cloud is a great place to store data that is taking up space on a device. The data is stored in a server farm, where refrigerator – sized computers are storing data until it is needed. There are cables that connect to these farms, that run along the bottom of the ocean, to your home. With cellular, the cables connect to a cell tower, then a signal can be transmitted through electromagnetic waves.
A great way to explain the cloud is through a house. A house can store a lot of stuff, but eventually, it gets too full. You go to put your stuff in a storage unit. You are able to access the unit whenever you need, so you can access whatever you need at any time. If you get robbed, everything you saved in the storage unit will be saved for you.
This month, a lot of fun festivities are going down at Disneyland…
Star Wars: Rise of The Resistance This opens January 17. The ride is one of the newest and most ambitious rides that Disney has to offer. The one in Disney World recently opened, but the one at Disneyland is opening this week. It will be the newest edition to Star Wars Land.
2. Lunar New Year Celebration This is also starting on the 17th. This will be hosted in California Adventure. They will have various new merch, food, and festivities to partake in. This year is “Year of The Rat,” so there is a lot of Mickey and Minnie around the park.
This article was very interesting. A boy saw a coati, a member of the raccoon family, and thought it was an aardvark. He nicknamed it the “Brazilian Aardvark.” He put it on Wikipedia, underneath the section of coatis. Hoping that someone would flag it, he left it online. Little did he know, this animal became quite popular. I thought this article was really funny, due to how easy people can believe what they read on the internet. You should always look up sources, to see where the information came from.
The article also taught me about credibility. I need to make sure to check where these sources are coming from, and if they are legit. When doing projects for school, you need to be able to use credible sources. Using credible sources can ensure that you are giving the correct information. For example, when you are writing an essay, you need to be able to have credible sources to back up your information. Credibility in websites are important for the rest of your life, because we are always online reading and researching.
Most people have run past a fake article, without knowing it. Here are some great ways to separate fake from real!
Check for an author. Do an internet search on the author to make sure they are legit.
Look for the publishing date. The older the date, the less credible it may be, due to the recent advances in everything in the past decade.
Look for sources. Sources are key for finding where the information came from.
Check the domain. A domain in the .com, .org, etc. The domain .edu is used for educational purposes by schools and classes. Be sure to use those.
Review the site design. Some may look a bit sketchy, so be on the lookout for those. Also, some might have invalid links attached, so check for those.
Look at the writing style. Are there numerous spelling and grammatical errors? These might be spam. These are similar to the spam texts and calls you may get.
Although some websites may look pretty legit (see the links below), they can be internet spoofs for the public. Be sure to use these when sourcing and researching for proper credibility!
At the zoo, I am always learning weird and wacky facts about animals. Here are my five grossest giraffe facts!

1.Giraffes have four stomachs, like cows. They will eat and regurgitate their food four times!
2. During mating season, male giraffes will taste the female giraffe’s urine to see if they are ready to mate!
4. Giraffes partake in a process called osteophagy, which means, “to eat bones.” They eat bones left over from carcasses to gain more calcium and phosphorous.
5. A giraffes heart weighs approximately 24 pounds, and pumps around 60 liters of blood around its body every minute. They have a blood pressure that is twice the average of a human.
